Owner-Operator Qualifications

 

Owner-Operator Qualifications

Owner-operators must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Valid Class A CDL

  • At least 24 months of verifiable commercial driving experience

  • Minimum age of 35

  • Acceptable motor vehicle record

  • Current DOT medical card

  • Ability to pass required drug and alcohol screening

  • No disqualifying safety violations

  • Knowledge of DOT and FMCSA regulations

  • Ability to operate safely in local and regional environments

  • Reliable communication and professional conduct

  • Ability to submit paperwork accurately and on time

  • Properly maintained and roadworthy equipment

  • Current registration, permits, and required insurance

  • ELD compliance when required

  • Ability to meet customer and facility safety requirements

Additional endorsements, credentials, or experience may be required depending on the freight, equipment, and customer.

Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee approval. All applicants are subject to document review, insurance approval, safety review, and available freight opportunities.

Preference may be given to owner-operators who have:

  • Experience hauling agricultural or bulk freight

  • Hopper bottom, end dump, step deck, tanker, or power-only experience

  • A valid TWIC card

  • Tanker endorsement

  • Experience operating throughout North Carolina, Virginia, and South Carolina

  • Familiarity with farms, mills, ports, plants, construction sites, and commercial facilities

  • A strong safety record

  • Clean, dependable, and well-maintained equipment

  • Experience with local and regional routes

  • Strong communication and time-management skills

  • A history of submitting paperwork accurately and on time

  • Availability for recurring lanes and project-based work

Preferred qualifications may improve placement opportunities but are not required for every available lane.

  • Protect the freight and complete each accepted load as agreed

  • Submit bills of lading, load tickets, receipts, and other paperwork promptly

  • Keep licenses, permits, medical cards, insurance, and required documents current

  • Comply with DOT, FMCSA, ELD, hours-of-service, and safety regulations

  • Maintain a professional appearance and respectful attitude

  • Keep the truck and trailer clean and presentable

  • Avoid abandoning or canceling accepted loads without a valid emergency

  • Represent Bonnie and Clyde Trucking LLC in a way that protects our customers, reputation, and business relationships.

Complete the owner-operator application.

We review your experience, equipment, documents, and safety record.

3. Interview
Qualified applicants complete a brief phone interview.

4. Onboarding
Approved owner-operators sign the agreement and submit required documents.

5. Start Hauling
Once cleared, you may receive available loads that match your equipment and location.

Submitting an application does not guarantee approval, immediate dispatch, or freight availability. Final approval is based on qualifications, safety history, insurance requirements, equipment condition, and current business needs.

Owner-Operator — FAQ

  • A valid Class A CDL is required for company driver positions.

  • Applicants must have at least 24 months of verifiable tractor-trailer experience.

  • Drivers must be at least 35 years old.

  • Insurance requirements depend on the operating arrangement. All required coverage and documents will be explained during onboarding.

  • Owner-operators receive 75% of the gross linehaul revenue for each completed load.

  • Equipment must be properly maintained, roadworthy, and suitable for available freight opportunities. Approval depends on equipment condition, specifications, insurance requirements, and current lanes.

  • Settlements are paid weekly by direct deposit after all required paperwork has been submitted and approved.

  • Our primary service area includes North Carolina, Virginia, and South Carolina.

  • Home-daily opportunities may be available depending on the lane, equipment type, customer demand, and the owner-operator’s location.

  • This is a 1099 independent contractor position. Drivers are responsible for managing their own taxes and are not classified as W-2 employees.

  • Approved detention, layover, truck-ordered-not-used, and other accessorial charges may be passed through according to the customer or broker’s payment terms.

  • Approval time depends on how quickly all required documents are submitted and verified.

  • Experience with hopper bottoms, end dumps, belt trailers, tankers, or step decks is preferred for those assignments. Some positions may require prior trailer-specific experience.

  • No. Owner-operators are independent contractors responsible for operating and managing their own businesses.

  • No. Approval does not guarantee immediate dispatch, continuous freight, home time, or a specific income level.
